Comments: Hey Guys, I just bought a 1968 Chevelle Malibu, 307 3 speed manual w/overdrive. I've never heard of an overdrive option with a 3 speed manual, but the man I bought it from said it was a factory option. He said it works, but the cable is broken. Does anyone know where I can find the cable assembley? Its a cable running to the tranny with OVERDRIVE on the handle.

Thanks

Comments: About a year ago, I purchased a '68 Chevelle Malibu, 327ci small block. It has a Powerglide 2-speed transmission. Other than the wheels and the alternator, the car is completely original. It has a beautiful recent paint job. Exterior color is Turquoise and Interior Color is original White with bench seats. I will break 270,000 miles on it very soon and she is still running strong. This car is my everyday driver! I plan on rebuilding the engine in the next couple of years. Any tips on anything would be great.
Thanks in advance,

Year: 1968
Name: Brendan Shannon
Email: <Titleistplya@aol.com>
Location: Los Angeles,
Comments: My name is Brendan Shannon and I recently got the car bug. After learning the basics about engines (how they worked), and all of the other necessities I decided that i wanted an old car.
After learning that Chevy was the best from my Grandpa, who as a completley original 55 Chevy, I decided to begin my search. Very quickly i decided on the CHevelle for its mean looks and unique character.
Much to my surprise my grandmas had a 69 Chevelle Malibu. I had never noticed it and thought of it as the green car. I begged her to sell it to me but she couldnt stand the fact that i was going to change it. So i had to look elsewhere.
The internet was my savior after failing to find any decent chevelles in the autotrader magazines or at local car shows. On the internet i was able to find lots of good chevelles in my area. After deciding that with my knowledge and ths issue of time and money being a factor, i decided to find a car that was near completion in very good order. I found one in SAn Diego that was just what i wanted. It was a 68 ss 396 black, 4 speed muncie with a hurst shifter, and clean interrior. After negotiating with the people on the price i drove it home that day. (i fail to mention the price because in hindsight i payed waaaay tooo much)
After driving it around for a few weeks i began to hear some funny noises from the engine. Then one day all hell broke loose and it, to say the least, died. I took it to BK automotive and learned that i would need to get it rebuilt.(the engines cam was falt and it threw a rod bearing) "Great" i thought..i just bought a car with the idea in mind that it was perfect. Anyways i got the engine rebuilt with a sweet eidlebrock intake manfold with the accompanying cam. To say the least the thing smokes now.
stats
68 ss 396 4 spd,black
3.33 rear end with 12 bolt posi.
front wheels 16X7, rear 16X10

Well whoever reads this...i have a quetion. How much horsepower would i have with the new intake manifold, cam, hooker headers, and flowmasters? Also i am facing a difficult question. Right now i have no power steeering or trick suspension. I would like to get new springs and sway bars to make it handle a little bit. THEN i was thinking about getting some european style racing seats with a 4 pt harness. What i have ecounterd is that to take out my stock bench would be a crime punishable by death. If i could somehow get these questions posted and hear what the rest of these guys think would be great. Anywa thanks for reading this.(sorry if it was tooo long)

I would like a photo of some bucket seat headrests that were factory on the 68 buckets showing them up or down or in both positions, or a suggestion of a donor vehicle that would have some exactly like them. Did these headrests have a single or double support?, Were they like a round tube or a flat square type support? Can anyone help? I've been searching online and cannot find close up photos of them. Comments: I wish to apologize for my attitude in my last post and not telling anybody ANYTHING about my car. I guess I was in a bad mood, that's all. I don't want anybody in here trying to run me over with their Chevelles. Why was I badmouthing other Chevy's? Especially other Chevelles, that was really stupid of me. I'd really appreciate it if that post was deleted:). Sorry about thinking that ya'll were bragging, too. You were just telling us about your Chevelles(BTW, I know a 68 Chevelle that can do a quarter mile in 9.38@140mph, and it still has those heavy steel bumpers and the interior). A lot of guys in my school brag about there cars, which most of then suck anyway. One of my friends is gonna drag-race a FUNERAL Cadillac 500 cu. in. Hurst:). Finally, I'm sorry for thinking that I was smarter than everybody. I just know alot about 68-72 Chevelles. I don't know or care a whole lot about 64-67 Chevelles or basically any other muscle car, unless it's a '65 Z-16, especially that one convetible, wherever it is:). I learned some stuff from this website, like a Hurst Super Shifter won't fit in a console, and other things. Okay, about my car: It was given to me when I was 8 by my Dad. He was like "Hey Colt, do you want this car?" and I was just like "uhh, ok". It's a 68(duh) SS396 Hardtop, no vinyl top. I think the original color was Grotto Blue(kinda a sky blue). It was a stick with no console, an original 4.11 posi rear, and unfortunately, that's all the options that I know. The original transmission is long gone, and I don't know the original motor, either(I didn't exactly know engine codes when I was in 2nd grade). The motor that was in it eventually exploded when someone left a bolt in a cylinder and fired it up. We did some work on it when we first got it, but basically worked on the motor every know and then until I turned 14. Until then, I wasn't really interested in a car. I was into toys, video games, ya know kid stuff. I finally got serious about finishing it 2 years ago however my dad is slowing me down. He won't help me do anything:(. I know, I need to do work on it too, but how can I sandblast if he won't get me any sand? I don't know where to get that stuff. We've already installed front disc brakes and power steering, but my plans are to also install power brakes, new shocks and springs, polyurethane bushings(basically everything rubber on the frame is long gone), and rear disc brakes POSSIBLY. Ok, on to the motor. It currently has a 70 402/350, but I want the hi-perf 69 396/375 at my grandpa's and put L-88 heads on it. The problem is, that he wants to put the SAME motor in a 68 El Camino that he has turned into an SS Clone. That's about it, and all the room that I have. Thank you for your apologies if you send any, I still want to join Team Chevelle:)

Comments: Ok, like everyone else in here, I have a 68 Chevelle, & it is an SS. Unlike SOME people in here, I'm not gonna sit here & brag all night about my car. Instead, I'm gonna answer your questions. I have some of my own, too. I may be 16, but am I the only one in here who can read VIN codes? Ok, let's start with Jeff Brown. I don't really care if his car was in Motor Trend or not, but he obviously has a 68 Chevrolet Chevelle(duh), SS396 sport coupe(It's a REAL SS if the third digit is an 8, most SS clone makers won't change the VIN, too stupid), the z meant it was made in Fremont, California(don't ask, the others are self-explainitory), and the 1235409 is NOT the facility #, it is the production sequence #(they start at 100001 in all plants except 4 some exceptions). I'm not sure about the factory header deal, the dealer had the right, though, to use any parts he had to make repairs(or Motor Trend coulda just put them on), I hope that fixes it, cuz I DON'T CARE!!! & don't send me any "BUT blah blah blah" mail cuz I'll just delete it. Ok, next question. Derek, I don't think you'll have a problem with that tall deck 427 dropping in cuz the 396 in mine practically disappears in that HUGE engine compartment, but I'm not sure. 4 all you guys who are looking 4 back pieces and steering wheel emblems, GOOD LUCK cuz you ain't gonna find any (I've already looked and mine isn't much better). Weird, everyone wants 68 parts but hardly any are on the road. I mean, they ain't worth a much as some of the others. They might be working on one, but they've been doing it for 30 years and no end, so I just forget them. BUT, your best bet is either a 69(a whole lot of those were made) or www.ebay.com (hint: you have to be a member to bid). 4 all you guys looking 4 books, just go to ebay or www.npdlink.com & order a free catalog(sure beats waiting 4 one on ebay). Whoah, I hope all this stuff actually fits. Ok, Mario, sorry, I've never heard your engine code but if it's what I think it is(DF), then the previous owner was right. It's 68 307/200 2BBL automatic hey the motors(2) before it had a 1BBL so don't gripe. Also, DON'T give me the casting # cuz if I can't see it, I won't read it. Give me the #s on the block just in front of the left(passenger) side cylinder head. There should be a little spot there for it. Forget the little #s, just read the big 7-8 digit code. Kelli, I don't have time to email ANY of ya'll but yours is a malibu convertible with black bench seats built in the 3rd week of May(just read the little #s). 4 the aftermarket guy, quit whining. Aftermarket cost a lot, and unless they are worn out, WORK on them. WORK is the only reason my car isn't still sitting in a junkyard somewhere. Ok, that's all 4 today, my only question is how I can join Team Chevelle. Ya'll probably really hate me now after some of the stuff I said, but if I was really like that, would I be helping you?

My first problem with the 68 was the drivers side window regulator broke.Changed the column shifter to a quick silver floor shifter. This winter i will be sinding it in to have a custom cowl hood made and some cool paint put on it that was priced out at 7,000.-9,000.dollars.
It will get all new interior it has seats from a dodge stealth in that i will keep in it. Hope work keeps me with a steady flow of money this isnt cheep or for the faint hearted.

Comments: I purchased my 68 Chevelle 8 months ago. VIN numbers reflect a Malibu coupe but it has an SS hood and SS steering wheel, I hope somehow these were original options but I know that its doubtful. It was originally a clutch car but had a TH350 in it when I bought it. I do not yet know what the original motor was but it has a 1975 SB 350. It also has Corvette ralley wheels w/ Goodyear Eagles. I had been looking a long time for a 68 Chevelle with a solid floor and frame when I found this car. I paid $1300 and felt like I got a good deal even though it needs alot of work. I have rebuilt the rear window area , rustproofed and repainted the interior, and am in the process of rewiring -HEI , internal altenator and numerous wiring gremlins. Next I am going to repair minor rust holes in the trunk and then on to removing large amounts of bondo, replacing and repairing body panels and a paint job . The motor runs but I am looking for a driveshaft. I hope to be driving her next summer. My plan is for this to be my daily driver when weather permits. I can stand back and squint and see that this will be an awesome ride( no one else does). I still need buckets(originally bench), console, seatbelts, clock and patch panels.

Comments: I am a proud owner of a 68 Chevelle SS (not a clone), with 88,000 origional miles. The car was sold as a matedor red with a black interior --- It now sits black on black with a black interior. The car is extremly clean, and other than the engine itself, the car is untouched and origional. The body is completly straight, although I plan to repaint this car back to its origional factory colour. It currently rides on Corvette 15inch Ralleys, which I plan to leave alone since it fills the wheel wells nicely. At the local track, I was able to do a Q/M time of 14.2 on street tires.. of course, if you came up to where I lived and saw this track, you'd know why it went so slow.. lol The car came with Front Disc brakes (4 piston), which I have converted to a 69 style single piston set-up. It also has the optional dash tack. All is well, but I have decided to bring her back original to concours condition so she can enjoy retirement, and I need help with the following. If you know of any of these parts, please e-mail me:
[1] if anyone knows how to make the origional tack run on a HEI distrubuter, let me know.
[2]If you know of an origional 396/350 hp intake, or 375 ... origional air cleaner assembly, valve covers (corvette dip doesn't matter), working Q-JET, and origional cam, Rockers, lifters and rods let me know.. If you have an origional cam you want to trade, I am willing to trade it for 2 cams, one never used still in the box (msg me for cam specs), the other in my car -- really raucny cam.
[3] I will pay good money for an origional 396 Steering wheel Emblem for 68.. mine is missing...
[4] if anyone has images they can e-mail me on what the engine bay is suppose to look like origionally, that be a good help.. Aslo, I am seeking the origional 12bolt rear end-ratios.
[5] Excellect condition exhaust manifold..
[6]Front and rear arm-rest pads (back if possible)
[7]U Hook with spinner for spare tire.
I am willing to part with the existing parts on this car for trade, or to help pay off a portion of the asking price for your parts. I have the following parts to trade :
Eldebrock Torqer II Single plane (low)
Holley 850 Double Pumper with manual choke
Eldebrock Valve covers (built in 60's -- no longer available)
2 cams, one mild, one raunchy.
Crane Cams Vacuum Canister
.373 12 Bolt Posi
Crane Roller Rockers (copper ones)for trade with 396 origional style rockers.

Thanks guys... Eric

Comments: I am the third owner of this ' 68 chevelle 2 dr.sport coupe born as a malibu. Ash gold, black vinyl top, rallye wheels, black bucket seats,console,w/4spd.This car is somewhat unique as the original owner must have had a working knowledge of the hot parts to order for this car.It was an original malibu car, now a SS clone made by me, it was a,327/275 hp engine, mated with a factory 4spd,with console also has the rare roller tach too, along with the real type gauges and clock and the really sharp simulated wooden steering wheel. It now has a 427 BBC engine prodcing about 450 HP. mated with a muncie m-20. Also this car has a 3:73 non posi rear the big f-41 sway bar setup front and rear.Last but not least, this car also was ordered with the rare 4-piston calipers, disc brake setup. This car has an original 30,000 miles and has been undergoing an extensive frame on restoration. The only metal to be replaced was the left front fender due to a dent. This car is acceptionally solid and clean for a 32 year old car.I also have replaced so many parts ,gas tank, fuel lines front to rear, brake lines front to rear,a complete hotchkiss rear suspension setup, gas shocks, coil springs front,rear.etc,etc. The list of parts is endless and also the cash to do it seems never ending. But.... she is my baby and she will really be something to see when we get her completed!! Thanks for listening!! Rich.

My name is Mario. I understand you have a 327 engine in your car.
I bought an engine this weekend that has a casting number
of 3914638 which I think is a 68-69 327. the guy who sold me the engine said it was a 305 but the numbers don't match. The heads are stock. So i am confused. Do you know if the casting number determines the engine or is it the heads/block that make a 305? Sorry, dumb question.

I also have a codo on the block something like 18G 105453 T0929DR

Is this like a vin Number? If you can help me identify my engine, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Not the chrome, it's actually the panel that the chrome bolts to. The car had been rear ended before I bought it and is dented on the driver side. If some one has a parts car that dosn't mind cutting the car up, I will pay for your laber cutting it off, shipping and of course the panel. Please e-mail me or call. Comments: I have a friend with a 1968 SS396 2 dr., Auto (on the floor), Chevelle that she has owned since new. The car has approximately 70,000 original miles and is all original mechanically and the interior is all original black, and perfect. The car has always been garaged. She had it repainted the original light green metallic several years ago and it still has the original black vinyl top in perfect shape. The paint job is quality. This is really a case of a car driven on Sundays by a little old lady. She's 73 now and tries to drive it around a little each week. She is not your normal little old lady however, she did tell me she out ran a cop with it back in the mid 70s here in Denver. Her current everyday car is a 2 door 84 Caprice Classic. A few years back she sold her '56 T-bird (that she had owned since new), and I am helping her restore the 61 Corvette she has had since new!!!!

She is looking to sell the car and we are trying to find out its value. It supposedly has some rare options, like a tilt steering wheel, etc. Where is the best place to go to determine what a fair price is for such a car, and how best to market it.

Please help direct us to the right place(s) THANKS!!!

Can anyone here quickly give me advice on how to tell if the original motor and tranmission are origional to the VIN and where on the block and/or transmission this number is? Owner says that the engine is origional and bored(.60) over. Did (M21s) come with the base 325 hp option? It is advertised as a 325 hp 396. Can I Id the transmission and motor by the VIN? Any help here is appreciated. Price is reasonable but maybe a little much if is a non-matching car. May buy it anyway, its sharp!

Other than the 200 different layers of spraypaint and bondo, it has posts between the front & back side windows, there are frames around the front windows, the back-up lights are in the taillight lenses instead of the bumper, the trim wraps around the edges of the taillights, and the trunk emblem looks something like the the grill emblem. If you know anything about these rarities please email me. I also got a $480 Neg. driving ticket for spinning my tires at a stoplight. Comments: I've got a 68 SS-396 Chevelle, that I want to make a good driver out of. The cars got a 4 speed 4.11 gears and a healthy engine,
I have rebuilt the front suspension, and brakes (original disc) and Installed gas shocks and 1 1/4" front sway bar. I intend to add a rear sway bar too, but I have been trying to decide on rear control arms. I feel that buying new after market may be the way to go, as that would mean less down time, and less work than boxing and rebushing the stockers. Anyone have any opinions ?
