Comments: Hi, I have a 1971 Chevelle Malibu 350 with a 4 barrel. I'm 15 and me and my dad are restoring it. It doesn't have power steering, and I was wondering about how much would that cost to put it in? And my speedometer is 10mph off, so how do I make it so it reads the right speed again? One other thing, the seat belts. With the shoulder strap above the door and the lap belt do you have 2 different ends for them or do u have one end that has 2 places to strap in? Please get back to me as soon as possible, thank you. Joe

is shoulder harness an option to use in place of lap belt?
my 71 only has one button latch per occupant?
did original equipment provide two latches?

I'm still confused.
how can the lap and shoulder belt be used at same time (conjunction)?
are they both to be latched to one catch?

I see from original Malibu adds that the shoulder strap was stock equipped.

but my 71 only has one button latch (receptacle)per occupant? In order for the both lap and shoulder strap to be used at same time, their would need to be
two button latches to connect to.

as far as I know you should have a lap belt and shoulder belt latch, that's how my car is ('71 chevelle also)

(reply)
is the second latch on a seperate strap? if so, do both straps come from the same anchor location? i'm tring to determine if original equipment was removed. oregon law man is gunna bust me when he see's strap up there. what a hassle to have to pull down strap each time.

Comments: I've owned a 71 Malibu for 4 years now, and so far have been very satisfied with the way my baby is coming together. So far, I have added the usual bolt on performance goodies and the rest of the engine has new parts and belts and hoses and such, the 350 turbo has had a grand overhaul with a TCI shift kit installed, the interior has had the full restoration--minus the bench replaced by buckets and gagues. New springs and shocks and Southside traction bars have helped keep everything on the ground. The wheels are Cragar SST from '82 and are 14x10 rear and 14x7 front.....and look emaculate! Pro-Trac rubber is still on the rims and still have the nubs on the tread! After the hunter metallic green has been applied to the body, a fresh black vinyl top will be added. Also, the stainless steel trim will be added back to the car to help set off the dark paint. Enjoyable hobby and the rewards are great!

When I press the middle/top, nothing happens...I have to press the bottom portion to get moving. My mechanic says that's normal on this model. Also, after I've pressed on the pedal to drive, I can take my foot off the pedal, and the car continues its acceleration. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem? I normally drive a 1978 Malibu, so I'm not familar with a 350.

Comments: I have a 71 SS clone. It is an SS in every way except for the dash. I have found several instrument clusters and housings that will work. I have found several out of Monte Carlos and Chevelles. They have the Clock in the dash instead of the tach.
If anyone knows the answer to this question please let me know. I have only had my car about a year and need to make it all SS. Did some SS Models leave the factory with no tach in the dash?
I would really like to find a housing and all the right gauges to replace my now malibu dash. Will it be a mistake to put in the dash with the clock, fuel gauge, and Speedometer ( no tach)? I'd rather have one with the tach, but am having a hard time finding a nice one. I don't have enough knowledge on my own to make this decision. Any help will greatly be appreciated. Please email me. Comments: I got a pearl white with black striped 71 SS chevelle. I run either a richmond 5-speed when I get the urge to slam gears, or if I need the launch I slap in a built turbo 400 with a 3800 stall and hurst quarter stick. The motor is a 4-bolt main 454 punched 60 over with Ross 11:1 full floating pistons riding Eagle ESP rods on an Eagle 4340 steel crank. I run a Lunati roller cam #50204 with almost .700 lift, with lunati roller lifters. Brodix BB2 plus aluminum heads that have been masssaged a touch, and crane roller rocker arms with crower pushrods. On top is an 1150 dominator sitting atop a Victor intake with MSD pro billet distributor, blaster 3 coil and 6AL box. A weiand aluminum water pump with march pulleys and TCI balancer, I run two fuel systems, one for the pro fogger NOS system ( set @ 500HP)
which I use a holley blue pump and fram race filter using 6AN line from the 15 gallon harwood fuel cell in the trunk to the regulator for the nitrous on the firewall. I use a holley volumax pump with a BG filter and 8AN line from the fuel cell to the holley big port regulator on the firewall for the dominator. We starve for no fuel. Out back I run a 12 bolt with auburn gear posi and 3:55 gears. Centerline 10 inch wheels with MT 28x11.5 street slicks( I might be able to get the 28x12.5's to barely fit)This car has a black interior with auto meter gauges, two fuel pressure w/isolators, oil press, water, and amps. Its got an autometer monster tach with shift light set at 7500 to flash and I love to see it light up. Front centerlines are 8.5x15 with BFG 235/60/15's, front and rear HD bigblock El Camino springs with a complete Energy Suspension bushing kit everywhere, She is tight. The body has 57000 miles on it and is completely rust free as it has spent all of its life in a garage. It has no heater or AC, but is inspected and street legal. It has run from the police on occasion and has not been caught doing it as of this time. Rap out or crap out my brothers!!!

I wrecked it and had to weld on a new quarter panel, which I have never done before, and had to do extensive body work. Since then I have replaced my turbo 350 with a 700r4, added all new suspension, put in posi, redone the interior, and oh yeah I put in a 383 stroker with 415 horsepower.

Comments: In 1993, I purchased a 1971 Chevelle Malibu 2Dr HT for $500. You might think "wow what a great deal", but when I saw the car for the first time it had not moved in three years and was being used as a storage shed for parts! Damage was extensive from the neglect over the years. After the wrecker towed the car to my house and restoration began, there were many times when I wish I would have kept the $500. Seven years later, I am proud to say that I wouldn't trade my Chevelle for anything. The car was used as a daily driver when I was still in high school but now I only drive it on weekends. There are some things that I still want to do to it in the near future(including replacing the entire drivetrain) but here are some details of it:

rebuilt 305 with Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb
350 trans with shift kit
dual exhaust with glasspacks
completely rebuilt front end
15x8 aluminum '5-hole' rims with GoodYear Eagles
restored to original tan interior with Kenwood Stereo system
1988 GM Medium Red Metallic Base Coat/Clear Coat

Comments: I have a 1971 non-cloned SS El Camino. The car was obvioulsy side swiped at some point in its life, and was partially fixed by the previous owner(thanks to a small fortune in bondo). Luckily, there is no frame damage, only sheet metal. I would like to find some new front quarter panels, but none of my restoration guides carry them for El Caminos, only Chevelles. Any help is appreciated.

Any INFO would be great. Thanks, Steve P.

Comments: I have purchased my 71 SS a few years ago. It was purchased and by 1973 it was a full blown NHRA SS/EA 1/4 mile race car. Running numbers in the 12's. And I have purchased the car from the second owner whom occasionally ran it in Brackets around the same et's and mile per hour. Now I have teamed up with over 30 of this countries best performance companies in America. To put it back into NHRA.The plan an accomplishment will be to be #1 in the country. I have companies from ARP to Wilwood. Helping out with this venture. I'm also involved with TEAM CHEVELLE AND AL MCKENZIE. To whom I must say really gives me that drive to complete this project. I must also state that I have an extremely great relationship with my Chevelle autoparts supplier whom has been a big asset and help with the do's and don't of the car. Since this car has to comply with the (semi) stock regulations of the NHRA. This car is equiped with a LS-6, rectangular port (990) heads stock castings, T-400 trans, dana 60 with 5.56's.It will also be running an exhaust system by BORLA. It's power will be over 800 hp and over 600 lb. pounds of torque. With one carb a 750cfm.(See my combo under my name in the Big Block Combo's that work to get more detailed information). No juice/nitrious. All throttle and pure racing gas. This should and will be a big challenge But.. seeing everyone out there trying so hard to keep thier Chevelles going and how many people with Chevelles are out there. It's a true rush. That keeps me going on mine. Hopefully some day I'll see all of you at the track. Don't be hesitant to stop by and say hello.

Comments: To all Brother and Sister Chevellers. Keep in mind. When you need parts for your car. Call Reds Auto Parts in Troup Texas ph# 903-842-3141. Speak to Mike Sr.He has it for all year Chevelles. Mikes had numerous cars appear in Hot Rod and Super Chevy mags. This is a autowrecking yard for Chevelles and El Caminos. He is known by Team Chevelle. And is part of my race team with my 71 SS. (Visit me on this website in Big Block Combo's that work). He's 100% accurate with all part discriptions. And quit reasonable with the price. So get those parts and keep those Chevelles and El Caminos going. Best of luck to Team Chevelle and Al. Thanks for the website and help.

More About Your Chevelle

New for '71 was a "Heavy Chevy" package which featured special decals and some SS equipment. While the SS was based upon the Malibu, the Heavy Chevy was based upon the base Chevelle model, which had less trim. The Heavy Chevy could be ordered with any V8 engine except a 454. Like the Malibu 400 cars, many Heavy Chevys have been converted to SS clones. The VIN on a '71 Heavy Chevy starts with 13437, while the VIN on a V8 Malibu or SS coupe starts with 13637

Comments: I'm 28 now.......I've been thru alot of cars. I've only held onto 1 though. Bought it right out of highschool, a 71 ss conv. (I don't think it's a real ss but don't really care). About 6 months after I bought it, and a week before carcraft, I was caught in the front of a 5 car pileup (no fault of mine). Wiped out my whole rear clip......rear quarters buckled....actualy bent the rear down. I didn't know too much about my rights then. Went thru a nightmare with insurance, they wanted to total, car had never been cut on. Finally my car went to what should have been a reputable place (A place called The Vette Shop *BEWARE*). They did a bad job and took forever. Not long after that.....kinda disgusted, I pulled the motor out, parked it in a garage, and there it has sit since. I've finally gotten to a point in my life where I can start to put some money and time back into this car. First I guess I need to find new full convertible quarters (I understand these are available now). Also does anyone know the paint code to match 71 ss wheels, I need to replace the tires and the rims need a fresh coat of paint while the tires are off. Well, that's my story.

My question is that he says we will find a 350 from someone and drop it in the car, but I want more power(I think). Is this engine going to give this car enough power for a young guy? What can I do to make this engine more powerful? I need to know the basic items I can add. I already have headers and a four barrel carb. Thanks for the help.

Comments: I have a 71 chevelle malibu that I am in the process of restoring. The person I bought it from said it came original with a 400 sb. and a th400 trans. I had never heard of the malibu coming out with anything bigger than a 350, I was wondering if that was true that some of the 71's came with 400's. I dont have the 400, or the trans the guy i bought it from kept it. I decided to put a 383 stroker in it. I was told buy a few really good racing engine builders that it should be producing a little over 500 hourse power. I am shooting for 11.50's. I cant wait to get it on the strip.

It's my 2nd. Had another '71 20+ yrs ago. Now in my 40's needed a project. Plans include mildly modifying it (i.e.paint, V8 (of course), wheels/tires, may clone it an SS) Who knows? All I do know is that I let the last on slip away & unless I trade up on another one, this one stays!

I've since had to do a little work to the engine bringing the horse power up from the factory 245 to a mild 325. It's now flat black with 15 in. alum. turbine wheels.Just be proud you own one,to the best of my knowledge there were only just under 2700 made thats a small # compared to the # of $@##!*&% cavaliers out there!! It has a built 400 stroker motor, with a holley 750 double pumper, edelbrock performer manifold, hooker super comp headers that go into 3 inch exhaust with two chamber flowmasters. this car is set up for nitrous and runs great. I would like to change the dual point mallory ignition-distributor system with an electronic "HEI" distributor i got out of a 1978 malibu, that had a 305 in it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how involved this will be. I plan on putting a high performance coil and module in the distributor. Also i would like to replace the intake manifold gasket ( it is leaking) i would like to know if anyone could give me any advise on doing this, and what the torque is on the bolts. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Or if any one would like to send me pics of their chevelle i would love to see them, and maybe chat. thanks alot.
