I have a stock 67 Malibu w/327 and PG. I need to replace valve cover (there is a hole in it). I am also having problems tuning the engine/carb (vacuum problem I think). So before look to buy replacement covers, I wonder if I have the correct setup installed or whether my setup is also causing my idle problems. (i have searched high and low for vacuum leak-none). pics on photobucket show PCV on pass side cover, oil fill tube with vented cap-original I think, and inside valve cover with baffle underneath the PCV hole. Does this setup look right? I want to keep original look so if my setup is right , I will be looking to buy similar covers.

Look's right.
Is the PCV valve working properly? Oil cap/vent isn't plugged up ,is it? |

PCV valve works right (pull out and cover w/finger and see engine response)-also new. Air filter is stock snorkel with no hookup for breather. original Rochester. From picture, oil cap looks pretty clean to me-wire mesh inside. shouldn't be plugged but I can't tell other than by looking at it?

Your oil cap is the air inlet for the crankcase so be sure it's clear.
Just what tuning issues are you having that you suspect the PCV system? You might try plugging the PCV line at the carb and see if you can tune the carb as you expect. That's just to test ,not to leave it that way. |

I suspect I have vacuum leak somewhere or something related to air intake as i have trouble setting idle below 800 rpm. I have posted before and have run out of options.
I have set points gap correctly, set timing at 16 BTDC, and worked with Carb to adjust idle but still runs a bit rough and cannot get good performance below 800 rpm. I have had heads re-worked with new valves, springs,.... I also suspected maybe a timing chain problem so I replaced with new double-row (nice). Removed intake again with new gasket. Spray WD40, ,,, around intake with no suspect area. I do not get a response on the right side air mixture screw on carb. I had 4bbl Rochester rebuilt by SMI so i suspect the internals are good. So i am left looking to figure out why the air mixture screw does not help me. Looking at the air mixture screw it looks like good contact is made up around the circumference. So I am looking everywhere to solve this problem so I thought maybe PCV issues aside from the fact that I need a new cover. |

Think I'd be calling Sean as that seem's like a carb issue.
With the engine off and the mix screw removed ,shoot some carb cleaner in the screw hole. Sounds like the idle bleed may have debris in it. |

Here's the circuit so you can see where the bleed's are and check for obstruction/debris on the side your having issue with.

thanks. i sent an email to SMI. i guess I could also take the carb out again and really look close here. if i find nothing, then.... i'll see what SMI says.

You shoot carb cleaner in the screw hole, you should see 'stuff' comming out the idle discharge and the idle bleed.
Wear goggles not glasses. |
