Question on piston install

I'm building a 454. Got my new pistons (Speed Pro L2465F ) pressed on my rods. The cranks in, ready to install pistons. I've rebuilt several engines before but these pistons have no hole or arrow telling me which way piston goes to front of engine. In the past, the overbore size can be read upside down when piston is installed. These pistons are .266 dome and have a valve relief. Does the valve relief face the inside of the cylinder or outside?
Thanks, Jody

valve relief goes on top, toward the valley.
If you look at the rod big ends, one side of the bearing hole is cut square, the other side has a chamfer, the square cuts should be together on each crannkpin, camfered sides toward the crank.

Look at them close, if the rods and pistons are together right, you should have 2 different sets of 4 identical assemblies, left and right bank pistons/rods go together different.

Jody,
There are not four right side & left side in a Rat or any engine with a dome piston
The dome goes to the outside, the flat (quench) to the valley & all the piston & rod assemblies will be the same with any dome piston for a BB
The bearing tang should face the dome (outside or pan rail) too

Just for info there are some small block dome pistons that are left & right but it refers to the valve notch location when the notches are valve specific.

200% correct, small blocks have two different part #'s to complete a set when you get into custom pistons modeled after your combustion chamber, some of the off the shelf one too

Hey Mike,

While we are on the subjest of pistons, how good of a job does JE do when they photo your chambers and make a custom piston?

We usually prefer Bill Miller and send them out to a guy that machines them to fit your specific chamber but JE looks like they can do it quicker, what do you think about them? JE can do it with a photo {cant remember what they call it} mold or an actual chamber mold that we would do, this is how we have done them in the past {chamber mold}

I would stick with what you are doing if you are happy with them
Haven't had real good luck with JE even when sending them a damn piston to copy :sad:
